Women in Construction week 2022
1. What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is getting to see the beginning and end of a job. It turn from something that looks like nothing into the finished product is so satisfying. Oh, and I get to have a few laughs along the way.
2. What’s a perk about working in the construction industry that most people don’t know about?
A perk for me is probably being able to do small jobs around home or to help friends and family. I also find people love talking to me about my job and the look on peoples faces is the best when they find out I’m an apprentice chippy. Also, following along to tradie vs lady on the Kyle and Jackie O show on my morning drive and feeling heaps smart knowing the answers!
3. What makes you proud of your work?
It makes me proud that I work really hard physically and mentally. In a male dominated industry I get some really positive comments from people I work with and sub trades about my work ethic and that makes me really happy.
4. What advice would you give to someone interested in working in construction?
Just do it! If I could turn back and I had what is available to girls now I would grab any opportunity with two hands. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. Best thing you can do is get some experience, ask some builders to labour, rip in and ask questions and if you enjoy it go for it.
5. What's it like working in a male-domitated industry? Do you wish there were more women in construction?
Of course I wish there were more of us in the game but that’s quickly becoming a reality which is amazing. I think by the time I’m a qualified chippy it will be more normal to see females on sites and I’ll love it. I love working with the people I do so being the only female on site does not bother me one bit, I’m also lucky I have another chick chippy in my company too!
